HORI ART SPACE presents Experience Betrays the Canvas, a solo exhibition by Nampyo Kim. This exhibition closely examines the artist’s practice, which delves into the inherent dualities and tensions of painting as a medium, navigating the complex layers between sensation and thought, representation and illusion.
For the artist, painting is not a window for reproducing emotion, but rather a space where emotion is continuously denied and dismantled. Life experience does not easily translate into painting; through enduring this impossibility, the artist approaches a form of painterly reality. Painting, then, is not a matter of sight, but a field of ideas—where thoughts vanish and re-materialize in a perpetual flow.
Traces of color left in the texture of paint are not mere visual elements, but fragments of contemplation and the very mode of painting’s existence. In the moment when "it's just paint, yet it appears as the sea," we confront the logic of illusion that painting generates—an illusion not of visible reality, but of another reality emerging in the gap between perception and cognition.
This exhibition highlights the process in which painting betrays sensory experience and moves toward conceptual thought. It is, at the same time, a question of what we truly “see” within a painting. Experience Betrays the Canvas invites viewers to stand before this fundamental inquiry of painting itself. We hope this becomes a moment for each visitor to encounter their own inner landscapes—through the surfaces of color and texture, and the traces of illusion and fracture that arise between sensation and thought.
