종려나무(Palm tree)를 그림의 일관된 소재로 다뤄오고 있는 승연례 화백의 초대전 《Shalom, Elegant blessing》을 개최합니다. 전시 제목인 ‘Shalom, Elegant blessing’은 말 그대로 ‘샬롬, 우아한 축복’을 말합니다. 보통 ‘우아하다’는 말과 ‘축복’이란 단어만큼 아름답게 와닿는 예도 많지 않을 것입니다. 승 화백 그림의 단골 소재인 팜트리는 성경에서 존경과 기쁨, 승리와 번영, 우아함이나 축복 등의 다양한 상징적 의미로 묘사됩니다. 때문에 ‘우아한 축복’이란 단어만큼 승연례 화백의 작품이 풍기는 이미지를 묘사하기에 적절한 말도 드물 것입니다.
승연례 화백 그림의 조형적 어법은 아주 간결하고 담백합니다. 판화지 바탕에 크레용 재료의 거친 듯 부드러운 터치가 더해져 아주 흥미로운 화면을 만들어냅니다. 자신감 넘치는 드로잉 선 긋기가 반복되고, 자유롭고 시원한 속도감이 지나간 자리에선 묘한 카타르시스의 대리만족까지 느낄 수 있습니다. 전체적으로 역동적이고 생동감 넘치는 필선과 아주 안정되고 고요한 리듬감이 어우러져 작가적 신념이 담긴 작품이 완성됩니다.
결국 승연례 화백의 연작은 ‘자유로움 속에 담긴 우아한 품위’를 보여주는 그림입니다. 한편의 서정시를 닮은 세련된 음률을 연상시키거나, 가장 순수한 기본이 최상의 완성을 이뤄낼 수 있음을 증명해주는 그림이라고 여겨집니다. 계묘년의 봄을 맞아 마련된 ‘승연례의 드로잉 회화전―Shalom, Elegant blessing’에서 남다른 생동감을 만끽하게 되길 기대합니다.
Our gallery is holding an exhibition titled Shalom, Elegant blessing presenting the works of our invited artist, Seung Yun-Ray. There would be few words in the world that can replace the splendid meaning of “elegant”, or “blessing”. Seung’s main subject of Palm Tree has a strong Biblical symbolism to describe reverence and joy, victory and prosperity, gracefulness, benediction, and so forth. Therefore, no phrase can be more fittingly tell of what Seung’s works emanate than our chosen title.
The visual language of Seung Yun-Ray’s work is simple and honest. The soft touch of primitive strokes in crayons on cardboard creates a very intriguing image. The confident repetition of lines that has dashed by in unstrained and refreshing speed leaves behind the sentiment of catharsis. The harmony of dynamic strokes and calm rhythm completes the canvas filled with the artist’s faith.
Hence, Seung Yun-Ray’s series show “the graceful dignity in un-restrictedness”, and as they evoke the sophisticated rhyme of a lyric, they also prove that the most basic can achieve the best completeness. As we greet the season of spring in the year of the Hare, we anticipate and hope that you may savor the exuberance from the paintings showcased in “Seung Yun-Ray’s Exhibition – Shalom, Elegant Blessing”.
