한결
한결 작가는 ‘유기농 옻칠 장인’으로 통한다. 전통적인 옻칠 방식을 오랜 시간 연구한 끝에 현대의 실생활에 가장 적합한 ‘건강한 옻칠 활용법’을 창안해 작품화 시키고 있다. 작게는 젓가락과 수저 부터, 크게는 가구나 입체 설치물까지 ‘나무에 옻칠 작업’의 영역을 크게 확대하고 있다. 어릴적부터 소목장 집안에서 자란 경험은 그에게 ‘만드는 것에 대한 진심’을 가르쳐줬다. 대학의 이공계를 졸업하고 들어간 큰 자동차 회사에선 쇠를 깎아 스피커를 만들었다. 최첨단의 섬세한 작업이 체질 에 맞았는지, 해외법인 임원까지 지낼 수 있었다. 하지만 오랜 세월 숙명처럼 체내에 감돌던 ‘목수 기질’은 결국 전통적 옻칠의 현대화에 소명을 다하게 된 작가의 길로 인도했다.
Han Gyeol is celebrated for his mastery of organic lacquer techniques. Through years of immersion in traditional methods, he has innovated them to align with contemporary living, creating what he deems as “healthy lacquer utilization.” His artistic repertoire spans from small utensils like chopsticks and spoons to grander works like furniture and three-dimensional installations, thereby broadening the horizons of “wood lacquering” in the artistic creations. Coming from a upbringing in a small farmhouse, he developed a “profound admiration for skilled craftsmanship” from a young age. Following his graduation from an engineering university, he embarked on a career with a leading automotive company, where he honed his craft by shaping metal to create speakers. His aptitude for this high-tech work was evident as he even attained an executive position even within an overseas subsidiary. Nevertheless, in the passage of time, the inherent “spirit of a carpenter” within him, seemingly destined, guided him towards the pursuit of modernizing traditional lacquering, answering his calling as an artist.
