학창시절부터 수많은 예술가상과 장학금을 독차지할 정도로 두각을 나타냈습니다. 그 중에 2016년 독일 브란덴부르크 연방주에서 수여하는 ‘젊은 예술가상 최우수 수상’은 대표적인 예입니다. 또한 2019년 독일의 주요 4개 도시에서 개최된 '독일 이머징 회화 작가 특별 순회전'의 53인 젊은 작가 중 한 명으로 초대되었습니다. 이때의 심사위원단이 전 독일 미술계에서 가장 권위 있는 미술인들만으로 구성되어 큰 화제를 모았습니다. 독일의 유명 미술비평가인 라우라 클림트는 레만의 작품에 대해 “단순한 희망을 불어넣기보다는 탈이데올로기적 미로 속으로 우리들을 밀어 넣는다. 문화적 위계질서 따위는 무시한 채 니체(F. W. Nietzsche)와 커트 코베인(Kurt Cobain), 심지어 헤로도토스(Herodotos)와 마돈나(Madonna)가 같은 무대에 서게 한다.”고 평가했습니다. 그만큼 레만의 작품은 기존의 조형적 형식을 넘어서는 과감한 실험정신을 근간으로 삼고 있다는 것입니다.
David Lehmann (b. 1987) has drawn widespread attention for an intense body of work so compelling that he has been described as "a new artist who sets the standard his peers should aspire to." Already at a young age, he has been invited to participate in major museum exhibitions across Germany, earning acclaim from audiences far and wide. The defining characteristic of his work lies in a free-spirited drawing technique unconstrained by any fixed form or framework. Praised for the brilliant talent he demonstrates moving fluidly between painting and drawing, Lehmann distinguished himself from his student years by sweeping numerous artist awards and scholarships. Among the most notable was the Best Young Artist Award presented by the State of Brandenburg, Germany, in 2016. He was also selected as one of 53 young artists invited to the Special Touring Exhibition of Emerging German Painters, held across four major German cities in 2019 — an event that generated considerable interest for assembling a jury composed exclusively of the most authoritative figures in the German art world.
Prominent German art critic Laura Klimt has written of Lehmann's work: "Rather than instilling simple hope, he pushes us into a post-ideological labyrinth — one that disregards cultural hierarchy and places Nietzsche and Kurt Cobain, even Herodotus and Madonna, on the same stage." This speaks to the bold spirit of experimentation at the core of Lehmann's practice, which consistently transcends conventional formal boundaries.
